History
|
The history of primitive wooden shoes starts from a birch stem. From time immemorial, primitive men knew how to protect their feet with just a wooden sole, which evolved over the years. The origin of wooden shoes or clogs, as they are also known, came from Europe, passing through different stages and coming from different places in the European continent. Geographically, it can be said that it spreads throughout most of Europe, from Finland to Portugal. We wonder then, where did the first wooden shoe appear?. The truth is that its origin is multiple and is related to different cultural events. In this way the clog evolved from a simple wooden sandal, through the zueco phase... into madreñas. The north-west of Spain is, without any doubt, the place where this way of protecting feet was most widely used, prime examples being the zoca in Galicia, the madreña in Asturias and the albarca in Cantabria.

The craftsmen who designed the clogs were based mostly in North-western Spain and, for this reason, clogs were distributed mainly throughout this area... |
